Individual Assignment: â€Å"Euro Disneyland† 1. Using Hofstede’s four cultural dimensions as a point of reference, what are some of the main cultural differences between the United States and France? PDI: Power Distance IDV: Individualism MAS: Masculinity UAI: Uncertainty Avoidance PDI: Power Distance IDV: Individualism MAS: Masculinity UAI: Uncertainty Avoidance The main cultural differences when using the Hofstede dimensions are in the dimensions Power Distance and Uncertainty Avoidance. It is clear that French culture accepts and welcomes a relatively big power gap.This means that it is hirarchical country where power and the flow of information is determined much more by hierarchy then in America, where this gap is less accepted by people with less power. The other big difference is France’s hight level of uncertainty avaoidance. The French would like to control the future as much as possible, they are not risk takers. The Americans on the other hand have lo w uncertainty avoidance that makes them risk takers, this coppeled with extremely high indiviualism and very low power distance makes them very entrepreneurial.They act on their own and are less likely to accept the status quo when someone has more power then them. French culture also has low masculinity which means it’s a femini culture. This means that soft skills and the family are very important in France. This can be seen by France’s extensive social welfare systhem. 2. In what way has Trompenaars research helped explain cultural differences between the United States and France? Trompenaars research is based on 46000 managers from over 40 countries who answered questionnaires based on their experiences in many different cultures.Trompenaar and his colleague Charles Hampden-Turner (â€Å"The Seven Dimensions of Culture† 2012) created a model where national culture is determined by 7 dimensions. First an important dimension is the individualism – colle ctives dimension. Americans are very individualistic. In the French culture work, decision-making and power is attributed to the collective. This can also be also seen in the Achievement vs. Ascription dimension. In America individual achievement is valued highly. France’s culture is more â€Å"Ascription† based, that means that the title and status you were born into determines your social level more then individual contribution.This is called â€Å"reproduction sociale. † The research is valuable because the methology is fact based and quantitative. The 7 dimensions look at factors that are not deemed relevant by Hofstede and give a more in depth picture of cultural differences. 3. In managing its Euro Disneyland operations, what are three mistakes that the company made? The biggest mistake first and foremost was that Disney did not understand the needs and behaviour of the customer. The customer was severely misunderstood and that let to many operational and cultural mistakes.Only 40% of the customers were French, many were vacationing Americans and Japanese. The French people expected to be able to buy wine and Disney initially did not offer it. Large luxury hotels were built for people who were expected to spend a week in the parks, however Europeans see theme parks as daytrips. Mistakes were made when misjudging breakfast and lunch routines and dishes, witch lead to long lines and bad service. The second mistake was not being able to convince the French that Disneyland is not an American assault on French culture.The French society was hostile from early on. Public intellectuals called the park an assault on French culture and farmers blocked the entrance of the theme park on opening day. The third mistake was the high pricing of tickets and hotel nights. Europeans have more vacation days then Americans, with similar income levels that means that the French have less expendable income per vacation day then the Americans. Disneyland r eacted to the mistakes by changing the name to â€Å"Disneyland Paris† this created a stronger bond with the city and France.Then wine was sold and the dining experience was adapted to meet customer needs. Also day ticket and hotel nights were cut by a third. The result of the changes was an increase in visitors from 8. 8 million in 1994 to 11. 7 in 1996. Based on its experience, what are three lessons the company should have learned about how to deal with diversity? The biggest lesson that they should have learned is that cultural differences matter. It is not possible to take the exact same concept that is working in America and apply it in another cultural context and then expect the same outcomes.This is especially relevant when it comes to behaviour. The second lesson is trying to have a better understanding of who the customer is and what he wants before the launch. Extensive customer research has to be done. In the Euro Disney case many of the customers where not Frenc h and many of the French customers did not want or expect to eat the best French food in Disneyworld. They saw Disneyworld as American and therefor expected an American customer experience that included, self-service and American food.However they also expected wine, so research is needed to understand the subtleties, what French culture can be left out when offering an American experience and what cannot. The entry into a market has to be careful and transparent in order to get more local support. The discussions with the government and the local population should not only be about the tax benefit Disney can get, but heavily focused on the positive effects Disney can bring to a host nation. These advantages, such as jobs and increased tourism have to vehemently communicated to the public.The third lesson is to focus on opening new theme parks in emerging economies. Not only are there less attractions to compete with, Disneyland Paris is competing with the city of Paris for tourists , but also are they more open to western influences and products. A Historical Perspective on Reading Research and Practice Essay

This article has responded to both internal and external forces resulting from gradual and dramatic transitions based on historical perspectives. This has permitted a reasonable reflection and a sense of wisdom that is susceptible to loss when one engages in it. The underlying reason is the critical dimension to the present day events and issues analysis resulting from the broadened reading culture. In the late 20th century, reading became a recognized study field with systematic research programs aiming at ascertaining its fundamental nature and its acquisition process. This resulted from the confluence of social, educational, political and economic factors. Quantitative and qualitative changes in U. S. public schools’ systems after the World War II provided favorable environment for the reading transitions. Reading processes and skills were broken down into constituent parts which were practiced and reinforced in a systematic and orderly manner during classroom sections. Reading became a conditioned behavior based on certain environmental contingencies. Individuals positively responded to learning from repeated and controlled stimulation from the environment. This stimulus-response relationship was accompanied by rewards and punishments led to the habituation of the reading act (Alexander & Fox, 2004). Therefore, academic learning involved identification of the preferred behaviors prerequisites and training. This aimed at untangling the chained links in reading so as to train the learner in each component skill. In addition, material effectiveness was structured and controlled in the delivery of environmental stimulation and practice opportunities. Emphasis on studying observable behavior focused on reading as a perceptual activity which included identification of visual signals and validating diagnostic instruments and remedial techniques. However, alternative human learning theories which focused on perceptual process as a whole still operated on underground which examined that reading is per introspection rather than through behavior. Human beings could make a coherent sense out of the perceptional data through whole-word recognition, context comprehension and word identification thus considering reading as a unique human activity owning definitive characteristics. Increased interest in internal mental structures and processes ignited by the advancements in neurology and artificial intelligence has caused transformations in the learning institutions. Moreover, the dissatisfaction with behaviorism as an explanatory system caused changes. The article points that present institutions should conceptualize learning as a natural process rather than conditioning and that language should be developed through a meaningful use. Also learning to read should be viewed as an inherent ability rather than a reflective action with laborious skill acquisition. As a result, reading research unified the literacy field through language arts. Learning to read became a matter of arriving at a facility due to the understanding quest within a language-rich environment. The growing attention to the structure and processes of the human mind and increased federal funding by the Unites States led to creation of research centers caused another theoretical transformation. These new researchers explained human language as an interaction between symbol system and mind. Learning as a natural metaphor was replaced with a mechanistic information processing metaphor. Text-based as a form of learning, involved knowledge which was organized and stored within the individual mind (Alexander & Fox, 2004). In addition, Knowledge base was depicted as powerful, persuasive, individualistic and modifiable since it was linked to the individual’s perspectives on what they had read, their interpretation and recall out of the written text. The information processing of this period resulted in cognition-related constructs which strengthened the aforementioned characteristics of knowledge. Furthermore, it focused on the individual mind. This was because the computer-based guiding had little considerations of socio-cultural influences in processing linguistic information. To add on, the research studies stressed on individualistic interpretations of written text and exhibited that the knowledge of the students could be greatly modified through training, direct intervention and/or overt instructions. Other contributors of improved text comprehension were instructional environments and pedagogical techniques. In view of any reading approach, there must be a shift away from the neurological argument to much concern for naturalism in the materials and procedures used to teach reading. Moreover, they should create unity within the language arts. The cognitive psychology gave a new viewpoint for literacy and educational researchers. It studied literacy with naturally occurring texts in natural settings with holistic and aesthetic school of thought. It aimed creating a mutual understanding arising in the social interaction of individuals in particular contexts at a time (Alexander & Fox, 2004). The dominant perspective was learning being a socio-cultural collaborative experience and the learner being a member of the learning community. Reform on modern schools  Present day schools should anticipate for motivation in the form of readers’ achievement of goals, interest and involvement in the learning experience with change in perception of texts, reader and reading. This can be achieved due to the introduction of the hypermedia and hypertext forms of learning which has increased the attention in classroom discourse thus improving the students’ academic. Effective orientation has to be done so as to capture the complexity of reading and recognize the changing nature of reading as the reader engages in a range of reading-related, goal-directed activities. With the dichotomization of reading into learning to read and reading to learn, it has led to integrated and developmental learning perspective. Engaged learning has led to the acknowledgement of the fact that reading extends to the texts students come across daily such as nonlinear, interactive, dynamic and visually complex materials transmitted using audiovisual media. Current learning institutions should learn about the potentials of alternatives nonlinear media and examine how pedagogical techniques and learning environments can be adapted to aid readers from struggling with traditional texts. Students should be encouraged to participate in meaningful and goal-directed text-based learning. Moreover, attention should be drawn to create a personally and socially valuable body of knowledge. Strategies are put in place to promote reflection, choice and deliberate execution on the learner’s part which actively engages the leaner thus developing the reading perspective. To be complete, readers, and learners should focus on demonstrating fluency in reading and other basic linguistic skills. Workable solutions  Some of workable solutions would include provision of personally relevant texts, both traditional and alternative that will promote deeper and wider student engagement in their learning. Putting in place technological advancements capable of transforming learning and teaching through production of proliferated information sources and different text types can also be productive. Involving high-stakes testing and efforts to institute national standards have hastened the students’ learning since they prescribe the content and skills learners should have acquired at various institutional levels. Investments in basic reading skills and components in special education institutions have helped struggling readers since researchers have greatly supported. Changes which might improve things One of major consideration that should be put in place is recognition of the fact that reading is invariably physiological, psychological and sociological thus an integrated orientation is a prerequisite. Therefore physical, visual, and neurological stimuli to the learning processes should also be employed. In addition, every reading process needs to enhance the psychological interpretation, storage and retrieval of text, goals formulation and expression of interests. Sociologically, a reading culture that focuses in intra-individual and inter-individual communication through linguistic media that are socio-culturally influenced can also play a big role in changing the existing education. Lastly, a fine-grained reading view that incorporate brain structures and mental activities of an individual and social behavior have to be integrated meaningfully throughout these orientations.

So these survey findings shows that there was no association between experimental group with their demographic variables include sex, para gestational age, birth weight, maternal complications during gestation, type of bringing, apgar mark at P & lt ; 0.05 degree. Table 11 ( a ) shows the Chi-square value for the association between umbilical cord falls off among experimental group with their sex was ( 3.519 ) , para ( 4.455 ) , gestational age ( 0.795 ) , birth weight ( 0.895 ) , maternal complications during gestation ( 0.170 ) , type of bringing ( 2.813 ) and Apgar mark ( 0.003 ) . So these survey findings shows that there was association among para and umbilical cord falls off. No association between experimental group with other demographic variables include sex, gestational age, birth weight, maternal complications during gestation, type of bringing, apgar mark at P & lt ; 0.05 degree Table 11 ( B ) shows the Chi-square value for the association between umbilical cord falls off among control group with their sex was ( 0.089 ) , para ( 0.4641 ) , gestational age ( 3.597 ) , birth weight ( 0.741 ) , maternal complications during gestation ( 1.099 ) , type of bringing ( 3.817 ) and Apgar mark ( 1.094 ) . So these survey findings shows that there was no association between experimental group with their demographic variables include sex, para, gestational age, birth weight, maternal complications during gestation, type of bringing, apgar mark at P & lt ; 0.05 degree The demographic variables ( Sex, Parity, gestational age, birth weight, maternal complications during gestation, type of bringing, apgar mark ) of both groups were non holding any association and therefore they were non confounded with the umbilical cord attention. Newborns of para I female parents had lengthier yearss of cord falls off than the neonates of multipara female parents. But, in regard to dry cord attention group there was no association between the cord falls off twenty-four hours with para. Effect of Enzyme Concentrations on Oxygen Production The function of an enzyme is explained by the  lock and key theory: the active site of an enzyme (the lock) has a specific shape in which only the precise amount of substrate (the key) will fit forming an enzyme-substrate complex (the product). Catalase can speed up the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide as the shape of its active site matches the shape of the hydrogen peroxide molecule. This type of reaction is an anabolic reaction (when a molecule is broken down into smaller molecules). Enzymes are able to increase the rate of reaction without actually being consumed in the process. Small quantities at low temperatures are able to produce results, which would normally require high temperatures and a violent reaction from any normal chemical means. Although increases in temperature may speed up the reaction, the heat will also denature the enzymes and make them unstable. All enzymes are catalysts (a substance that causes or accelerates a chemical reaction without itself being affected), and they work best at pH7. As long as the concentration of the enzyme substrate (hydrogen peroxide) is much higher than the enzyme (catalase) concentration, the rate of reaction is directly proportional to the concentration of the catalase. This is because, as the enzyme concentration rises, the number of active sites that are available to interact with the substrate also rises; this increases the rate of product formation. My original experiment was an investigation into how the temperature of yeast would affect their rate of respiration. However when it came to the actual experimentation we found that the volume of dye and the volume of yeast we were using was too great (resulting in the dye actually rising out of the U tube): this meant that I would have to scale these down. However, we soon found that by decreasing these volumes the results produced were very small so I decided to completely change my experiment; instead of testing temperature, I decided to change the concentrations of the yeast I was using, and see how that would have an effect on the yeasts rate of respiration and therefore the volume of oxygen evolved. Key Variables Concentration of yeast: The rate of respiration in yeast (and therefore the volume of oxygen evolved) may change depending on its concentration Volume of hydrogen peroxide: I am mixing this with the yeast so the catalase will cause it to decompose into water and oxygen Type of yeast: The rate of respiration may vary in different types of yeast Temperature of the room: the temperature can affect the rate of respiration for the yeast depending how hot or cold it is Type of equipment: the length of the glass delivery tube can affect the volume of oxygen evolved Volume of yeast solution: The volume of oxygen evolved in yeast may differ depending on the volume of yeast solution Independent Variable Concentration of yeast: I am investigating how the volume of oxygen evolved from yeast (specifically the enzyme in the yeast catalase) changes when the concentration of yeast suspension varies so it is important to change this variable Controlled Variables Volume of hydrogen peroxide: since I am already changing the concentrations of the yeast I use, I must keep the volume of hydrogen peroxide the same throughout in order to make it a fair test Type of yeast: I must use the same type of yeast throughout: otherwise this could affect the amount of oxygen evolved in the yeast Temperature of the room: I am going to maintain the same temperature in the room I am conducting my experiment in to try and get the most accurate result I can Type of equipment: the size and diameter of the glass delivery tube affects how the long the test lasts ultimately having an effect on the volume of oxygen evolved Volume of yeast solution: I have to keep this the same if I want to get accurate results Dependent Variable Volume of oxygen evolved: The volume of oxygen evolved will change depending on how much concentrated yeast is being mixed with the hydrogen peroxide My prediction: I think that as I increase the concentration of yeast, the amount of oxygen evolved will increase proportionally: this is because as the enzyme concentration rises, the number of active sites that will be available to interact with the substrate (hydrogen peroxide) also rises increasing the rate of oxygen evolved. My experiment Apparatus used: Gloss delivery tubes Screw clip Clamp Rubber tubing Litre beaker Inverted barrel Boiling tube Plastic syringes Rubber bung Glass stirring rod Stopwatch Experimental Procedure First, I used clamps to support the boiling tube and attached the rubber tubing to the barrel of the 20cm3  syringe Then I removed the plastic syringe, leaving the needle in the same position, and removed the bung from the boiling tube After stirring the yeast suspension (which I made by adding 10g dried yeast to 100cm3 water I prepared it one hour before I actually needed to use it), I used a plastic syringe to introduce 5cm3 of yeast to the boiling tube I then filled the 1cm3  syringe with and placed it into position I opened the screw clip to draw water into the barrel of the 20cm3 syringe and closed it once the barrel was full, then I injected the hydrogen peroxide into the boiling tube I measured and recorded the volume of oxygen collected in the barrel of the 20cm3  syringe over a period of five minutes (I also used a stopwatch to measure how much oxygen was evolved per minute) This was repeated using 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30cm3  yeast suspension in the boiling tube (with fresh samples of yeast and hydrogen peroxide) This method was repeated for the above three times and a mean average was calculated; my results were recorded in a table (see my results) Using the tabulated data I plotted graphs of my results before analysing them In the above table we can see that when 5cm3 of yeast is being mixed with the enzyme substrate and an average of 4.77cm3 of oxygen is being evolved, then in theory when 10cm3 is being mixed with the enzyme substrate the volume of oxygen evolved should be double the average volume produced for 5cm3 of yeast (4.77cm3 x 2 = 9.54cm3). However, this is not the case, as actually an average of 5.33cm3 of oxygen is being evolved for 10cm3 of yeast being mixed with the hydrogen peroxide: this is because part of the oxygen evolved is actually being used by the substrate for respiration this results in the curve of the line in graph 3 + 4. Data analysis of all graphs In graph 1 a pattern can be seen in the results: the higher the yeast concentration, the greater the volume of oxygen is evolved. We can also see that towards the end of run 1 the volume of oxygen produced does not change and it becomes a straight line: this might be attributed to the fact that the yeast has become saturated with the substrate. In my scatter graph I have decided to use polynomial lines of best fit this is because rather than a linear line of best fit (which is completely straight and does not actually show the curve/steepness of the varying results) a polynomial line actually shows the curve, and allows the viewer of the graph to see how the production of oxygen actually fluctuates and changes. In graph 2 we can see that most of the oxygen evolved from the reaction passes into the collecting vessel within one minute of mixing the two reactants together. Afterwards the rate slows and only a small volume of oxygen is produced afterwards (particularly in between the third and fifth minutes). The pattern of oxygen evolution indicates that the reaction is extremely rapid. In graph 3 it can be seen that as I increase the concentration of yeast the volume of oxygen evolved increases proportionally: this is because as the enzyme concentration increases, the number of active sites that are available to interact with the hydrogen peroxide molecules also rises thus raising the production of oxygen. In graph 4 we can see that the error bars are very small, which means that the results produced must be very accurate (as there is not much range between the different volumes of oxygen produced per yeast suspension). Conclusion Overall, my results show that there definitely is a quantitative relationship between the concentration of yeast/catalase, and the volume of oxygen evolved: the higher the yeast concentration, the higher the volume of oxygen was evolved: this was because as the enzyme concentration rose, the number of active sites that were be available to interact with the substrate (hydrogen peroxide) also rises increasing the rate of oxygen evolved; hence, my original prediction was correct. Evaluation All in all I would say that my experiment was a success as I had no anomalous results (so I would not need to repeat any), and my results agreed with my prediction; my results were also substantial enough to let me draw a conclusion from them. I would say that my experiment was kept fair, however I believe that more could have been done to make sure my results were of optimum accuracy: for one I could have regulated the temperature of the laboratory I conducted my results in (maybe by having a thermometer with me and making sure that the temperature more or less stayed the same). Also, when measuring the volume of oxygen evolved per minute, the results maybe could have been more accurate (as sometimes there was a delay in pausing the stopwatch, causing more seconds to be added onto the actual time taken). However, as seen in graph 4, the error bars are very small, meaning that the accuracy of my results were very precise: this is most probably due to the fact that I repeated the expe riment for each of my yeast concentrations three times so I could have lots of results to back up my prediction/conclusion. If I had to make any modifications to my experiment, one would be that I covered a larger range (in terms of yeast concentration) so that I could have even more results to back up my conclusion; however I dont think this would be a necessary change as I believe the results I have already firmly support my conclusion. Sometimes when I was measuring the volume of oxygen evolved per minute (for a period of five minutes) I sometimes experienced difficulty in stopping the stopwatch as soon as one minute had passed: maybe if I had had two people timing separately for me, I could have ensured that the final recorded time was accurate. Apart from that though, the rest of my equipment succeeded in making my experiment a fair test the syringes had a set amount of substrate in them, thus resulting in me correctly injecting the precise volume of hydrogen peroxide each time. I would not make any improvements to my method other than washing each syringe after use, to prevent any chance of contamination.
